Silicone Rubber Explained

Silicone rubbers differ from other elastomers in their wide and unique property range. These properties result from their special chemical structure, consisting of an inorganic backbone with organic groups.

With these unique characteristics, silicone rubber has been widely used to replace petrochemical products in various industries like aerospace, munitions industry, automobile, construction, electric and electronics, medical and food processing industry.

Recently, these scopes of silicone applications have been expanding at a great speed by the high demand of industries that require a more reliable elastomer.

LSR Tooling & Molding

Producing a quality, precision-molded LSR part begins with the tooling. Building a production mold entails a combination of CNC milling and EDM (electrical-discharge machining) and uses the highest quality hardened stainless steel. It takes time and a high degree of accuracy to build a production mold capable of withstanding the LSR molding process, which includes three main challenges:

Precision (viscosity of LSR)

Temperature (~420 degrees Fahrenheit / 215 degrees Celsius)

Wear (abrasiveness of LSR)

What is EDPM Rubber?

EPDM is ethylene propylene diene monomer, an extremely durable synthetic rubber with numerous advantageous characteristics. According to ASTM D-1418, a standard classification system for elastomers,

EPDM is an M-class rubber. EPDM rubber gaskets provide reliable, long-term sealing in extreme weather conditions and across a wide range of temperatures. Compared to other rubber materials, EPDM offers excellent resistance against aging, wear, wind, weather, ozone, and ultraviolet light. A good thermal and electrical insulator, but exhibits poor compatibility with petroleum products and concentrated acids.

Natural rubber

Natural rubber provide superior dynamic sealing. They have a low level of damping and good low temperature properties, and mate well with metal surfaces. Natural rubber (NR) seals also resist tear and abrasion, and can resist shear and compression for long periods in the absence of tension.

- Provide excellent shock resistance and dynamic sealing.
- May experience ozone cracking when subjected to tension.
- Natural rubber or NR latex is cost-effective.

Nitrile and Buna-N Material

NBR are an excellent choice for use with fats, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, oils, and petroleum-based fluids,
NBR, also known as nitrile rubber or Buna-N, is an oil-resistant elastomer.

Nitrile resist water and many chemicals. They also have good physical properties. They are an excellent choice for use with hydraulic fluids, fats, silicone greases, oils, and petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline

What is Viton?

Viton rubberViton® is a high-grade fluoroelastomer originally developed by DuPont in the 1950s as a transportation product. This trademarked brand name is now held by Chemours. Viton® was quickly renowned for its resistance to fuels, high temperatures, and many chemicals. The grade of Viton® is often differentiated by its fluorine content level.
